|Garfield County oil and gas attorney Chad Lee was recently tapped by the American Bar Association to author a chapter on oil and gas leasing for “Beyond the Fracking Wars” published last month by the American Bar Association. In his chapter on oil and gas leasing, Chad discussed the intricacies of oil and gas leasing, split estates, and landowner rights. Chad Lee was asked to author the chapter to provide a Western Colorado perspective on an issue at the forefront of national energy policy.
According to the American Bar Association:
“Beyond the Fracking Wars provides an accessible and credible reference for lawyers, public officials, planners, and citizens. It avoids a “pro” or “anti” position and serves as a balanced resource on common issues associated with unconventional oil and gas exploration and development.
This timely and relevant reference book covers:
• the technologies and regulatory framework governing oil and gas development via hydraulic fracturing;
• case studies exploring the hurdles, pitfalls, and opportunities for creative solutions;
• and innovative approaches to managing the impacts of the “shale gale,” on both the regional and international level.
Whether you are a state and local government lawyer, land owner, public official, planner, oil and gas industry employee, or interested citizen, Beyond the Fracking Wars is a must-have reference for understanding the controversial subject of unconventional oil and gas development and its impact on local governments.

“Beyond the Fracking Wars is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the competing policy choices that must be made–especially in disputes over resource extraction and governmental regulation–as unconventional shale oil and gas development moves forward.”
-Bruce M. Kramer, Texas Tech University School of Law (emeritus) and University of Colorado Law School
“This book expertly captures the core issues that have accompanied the recent rapid growth of shale gas development in the United States. Beyond the Fracking Wars is thoroughly researched and has excellent breadth and depth. Its coverage of legal, social, and technical topics from the local community to the national level provides a refreshingly detailed account of this complex resource boom.”
-Hannah Jacobs Wiseman, Florida State University
“There are few issues as polarizing and divisive as fracking and other methods of hydrocarbon development. It is hard to imagine a book that stays above the fray and yet is both comprehensive and detailed. But Beyond the Fracking Wars does just that, and more. Eminently readable, it will be of inestimable value to attorneys, planners and lay people alike.”
-Mark B. Lapping, coauthor of The Small Town Planning Handbook and Rural Planning and Development in the United States
